Festival of Lights kicks off in Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah Harbor Festival of Lights kicks off Nov. 23 and runs until Jan. 1.

The children's charity non-profit, Savannah Harbor Foundation, is working with charities and organizations in the Savannah area on the interactive holiday experience.

Take a drive through of more than 60 larger-than-life lighted displays around the Savannah Harbor Road Course on Hutchinson Island. Displays feature everything from moving pirate ships to enormous nutcrackers and oversized teddy bears.

After the drive, families can park at the center of the Road Course in the pit and paddock, and enjoy activities and festive treats like s'mores and hot chocolate around a bonfire.

Staples Safari Zoo will present an exotic animal exhibition. There will also be a live nativity scene.

Register for Alive in Savannah, a fitness-oriented event on New Year's Eve Day, including a 5k, 10k, kids quarter-mile and various exercise challenges, ending with a fireworks show in the evening.

2012 FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS SCHEDULE:

Wednesdays -Sundays weekly including Dec. 24, 25, 31 & Jan. 1, 6-10 p.m.

$20 per car (includes $5 refreshment voucher)
$5 walkthrough (trolley and horse-drawn carriage rides also available)

Festival of Lights proceeds support: Greenbriar Children's Center; Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society; Performance Initiative; Bethesda Academy; AWOL; Lighthouse Ministry; The Interfaith Hospitality Network; The Empty Stocking Fund.

    Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving.
