EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Effingham County Sheriff's Deputies say they found 26 animals living in filthy conditions at a mobile home near Guyton along Highway 17.

Neighbors say the owner had dogs, cats, rabbits, and lizards but then disappeared and left the animals alone.

When deputies arrived, they say the conditions were so bad they had to wear respirators to go inside.

The home was filled with feces and some of the animals were dead.

Many of the animals were taken to the Effingham County Animal shelter on Tuesday. According to the shelter's director, some were thin, but overall their condition was decent.

Deputies say they know who the suspect is. They say she will be charged with 26 counts of animal cruelty. As of Tuesday night, deputies had not arrested her.
