Beaufort Area Base Boosters Head to Washington

The Beaufort Military Enhancement Committee (MEC) is taking Beaufort's story to Washington to help save the area's military bases. The committee chairman and vice-chairman are heading to our nation's capital next week to speak to key decision makers, trying to keep Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, and Naval Hospital Beaufort off the base realignment and closure  (BRAC) list.

MEC vice-chairman Bob Semler told us the plan is "to increase awareness to key decision makers in the BRAC process, specifically HT Johnson, who is the assistant secretary of the Navy for installation and environment, and also we're hoping to meet with Asst. Commandant General Neiland."

The next round of base realignment and closures is scheduled for 2005.
