SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Before the stuffing begins, some turned to another Thanksgiving tradition, chasing down the turkey at the annual United Way Turkey Trot.
"This is the first Thanksgiving in I don't know how long that all of our brothers and sisters are together," said Dana Fischl. "This girl here, Laura Fischl, found this race and decided we were going to run in crazy get ups together."
It's been nearly a decade since the Fischls have all been home for Thanksgiving.
"All of us are military and are here from opposite ends of the world right now," said Dana Fischl.
Now, they are giving back to the community by helping raise funds for the United Way.
"We have never done something like this before," said Laura Fischl. "I thought this would be a neat thing to do together and found some hats on amazon.com."
Now in its 4th year, the 4 mile run/walk gives families a chance to bond.
"I am so happy. I just flew in last night," said Laura Fischl. "We all met at 5:55 a.m. this morning so this is wonderful."
It also gives them a chance to boost their metabolism before the Thanksgiving celebration begin.
"It benefits the United Way in so many ways and allows families to kick off their celebration in a healthy manner," said United Way President Greg Schoeder.
And all while enjoying the memories they are making along the way.
"I am thankful for family and time we get to spend together," said Richie Fischl.
It's thanks to individuals like the Fischls that keeps the United Way running and improving the lives of so many in the community.
WTOC is a proud sponsor of the race. Pat Prokop and Lynda Figueredo placed second in their age groups. The presenting sponsor was SouthCoast Medical Group.
