Simply Southern serves holiday meal to those in need

Posted: Updated:

The owners of Simply Southern Restaurant in Springfield are serving Thanksgiving meals to those in need.

Debbie Collins, her sister and brother-in-law have been preparing and distributing holiday meals for the past few years and they say the event grows every year.

This year, around 30 volunteers distributed almost 400 meals to low-income families and to those who can't afford a holiday meal of their own at Springfield United Methodist Church Thursday.

"It means a lot to me to have an opportunity to enjoy a meal without cooking it for myself," said Janette Brown.

After seeing the need in her community, Collins and her family decided to do what they could to help those less fortunate.

Volunteers spent several hours preparing the meals just in time for the holiday.

"I felt it was God's will for us to do this and get these meals distributed. A lot of people don't have the means to afford a Thanksgiving meal," says Collins.

Volunteers will also be distributing meals on Christmas Day. To donate or volunteer, call Amy Moore at 912.754.1162 or 912.228.0561.
