Ridgeland Police mourn the death of K9 Tony

RIDGELAND, SC (WTOC) -

The Ridgeland Police Department is mourning the death of one of its K9 officers, Tony, a 14-year-old German/Dutch Shepherd. He died at the home of his handler Cpl. Chris Malphrus on Nov. 19.

K9 Tony was a full service dog assigned to the ICE team. He handled numerous K9 related calls for service, leading to multiple arrests. Police trained K9 Tony to serve a variety of duties, including patrol, tracking, suspect apprehension, handler protection and drug detection. Over his career, K9 Tony was responsible for having several automobiles seized and located a substantial amount of illegal drug money, over 1,200 pounds of marijuana, 100 pounds of cocaine, 15 pounds of heroin and five pounds of methamphetamine. He also participated in building searches and made appearances at school and community events.

K9 Tony began serving the Ridgeland Police Department in September 2000. He retired from service in December 2010.
