Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Chief Willie Lovett isn't waiting for the OK to hire new officers to start his planned street drug unit.
Lovett told WTOC some of his officers are already actively working as part of the team. As WTOC has reported over the last few months, the chief wants to hire 65 new officers and dedicate some of them completely to a street drug unit aimed at street level drugs versus larger scale operations conducted by the Savannah-Chatham Counter Narcotics Team.
A small group of officers have already been assigned and the unit is in operation.
"On a small scale. We've always had a small scale tactical unit that did street level type drug enforcement but the problem was the officer also did other things and was not totally dedicated to street level type drugs," Lovett told WTOC.
The Chief is still waiting to find out if his request for more officers will be granted. A final proposed budget is expected to be adopted by the middle of December.
