SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

With lawsuits piling up against King America Finishing, and the manufacturer still discharging into the Ogeechee, a new woman has taken over as the river's advocate. Ogeechee Riverkeeper Executive Director Emily Markesteyn has been named the interim riverkeeper.

"It is daunting, but I have a really good network of other environmental groups and Ogeechee Riverkeeper supporters who have already reached out and told me to call on them at any time, and I certainly plan to do that. They are still discharging without a permit, and it has got to stop. The citizens are not being able to use the river like they should be able to. It is our right to use the river to fish, to swim and to drink," said Markesteyn.

Markesteyn takes over for Dianna Wedincamp, who stepped down Monday to take an environmental consulting job. The board of directors has also hired a new outreach coordinator.
