Police ramp up after crime rise near GSU campus

Posted: Updated:

Statesboro Police tell WTOC they and the counterparts at Georgia Southern University have increased patrols near the campus after a string of home invasions, armed robberies and other crimes.

In the past month, police have seen 14 such crimes. Eight of those occurred in Statesboro neighborhoods that surround the university.

"Citizens need to be aware, they need to be vigilant and watch for anything suspicious," stated Maj. Scott Brunson of Statesboro Police.

Brunson said the crime increase has several causes. First, those neighborhoods have seen a population influx with more apartment complexes and more residents. Some are university students, while others are citizens attracted to the neighborhood. Second, economic troubles have lured some people to steal wallets, electronics, and anything else they can sell.
