Crews working fire at Georgia-Pacific plant in Allendale County

Representatives from Georgia-Pacific have confirmed their plant in Allendale County, SC, near Fairfax, has been experiencing a fire for the majority of the day.

Fire officials also confirm that crews have been working the fire since 7:30am, and plan to be there for several more hours.

Plant workers were not injured during the fire. One firefighter was taken to a doctor for care.

Greg Guest with Georgia-Pacific confirms that the fire was contained to one portion of the of the mill, a section that was down for maintenance. Guest cannot yet confirm the extent of the damage to the mill, but says that employees were working in unaffected portions of the mill. He does describe the situation as "under control." The section of the mill that experienced the fire has wood in it.

Multiple units responded to the mill, including fire and rescue crews from Jasper County, Bamberg County, Allendale County, Hampton County, South Carolina Emergency Management, the Allendale County Sheriff's Office, and the Allendale County Administrator's Office.

    After years of an almost complete moratorium, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council voted 12 to 1 Monday to open a limited 2017 red snapper fishing season in the South Atlantic. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the season will likely begin in mid-to late October.
