The murder trial for James Carter began Tuesday with opening statements and witness testimony. Carter is accused of murdering Chandler Johnson, 15, on Sept. 25, 2011. Carter knew the teen through his mother.
Johnson lived with his grandparents, but was visiting his mother for a weekend. Johnson disappeared while she was at work. With no evidence of struggle or foul play, police initially believed the teen had run away from home.
Days later, a neighbor recovered digital footage from a security camera that showed Carter's car arriving at Johnson's mother's home and leaving moments later with Johnson inside. Hazlehurst police said Carter then confessed he'd killed Chandler the afternoon he disappeared and showed police where he had buried him in woods near a rural church cemetery in Jeff Davis County.
The trial is expected to conclude by the end of the week.
