BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

A Bluffton couple has been charged with neglecting a vulnerable adult after the woman's mother was found in deplorable conditions, with sores and maggots on her body.

Cheryl Estrella, 21, and her boyfriend, Richard Wimmer, 22, have been charged with felony neglect.

Police say Estraella's mother, Laura Miller, 47, died back in September. An autopsy shows she died of natural causes but the conditions of the home she was living in were bad.

Thursday night, neighbors told WTOC the couple hadn't come to the house in days. According to authorities, the woman's colostomy bag was overflowing and spilling onto the mother's leg.

If convicted, Estrella and Wimmer could face up to five years in prison. If neglect or abuse lead to her death, the charges and penalties could change.
