SHELDON, SC (WTOC) -

A school bus and a South Carolina Department of Corrections van were involved in a wreck Friday morning in Sheldon, S.C.

The collision occurred at about 6;30 a.m. on US Hwy 17 or Trask Parkway.

A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper said that a South Carolina Dept. of Corrections van was traveling on US Hwy 17 when Tina Hamilton, of Pineland, S.C., who was driving a Beaufort-Jasper EOC Head Start school bus, pulled out onto the highway from the El Cheapo gas station, causing the two vehicles to crash.

The bus overturned. South Carolina Dept. of Corrections said there was a driver and 10 former inmates in the van when the crash occurred.

The driver was transporting the former inmates, who had just been released from the prison at Ridgeland Correctional Institute to the bus station to go home, according to the Dept. of Corrections. One inmate was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center with head injuries. The man is stable condition at this time.

The driver and the rest of the former inmates were taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for observation. The driver had minor injuries.

A Head Start representative said Hamilton was on the way to pick up preschool students for school when it happened. No children on the bus at the time. She was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
