New England turtles visit Jekyll center

Posted: Updated:
JEKYLL ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

A group of turtles rescued in New England arrived Monday at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to recover from a condition called cold stunning.

Dr. John Marr, general manager of the center, said it resembles hypothermia and affects turtles exposed to water temperatures below 50 degrees.

"Typically, it happens when turtles get into smaller waterways like bays where shallow water can turn cold," he noted.

The group includes four loggerhead turtles. Marr did not have a timetable on how long the turtles would stay.

The New England Aquarium rescued dozens of turtles in their area recently, but sought help from other centers due to overcrowding.
