SCMPD detectives work to stop gang activity

Posted: Updated:

Savannah Chatham Metro Police say they're learning more and more about the key players in some of Savannah's largest gangs, including two men involved in the Coastal Empire Fair shooting.

Detective Udon Carter spends his days on the streets of Savannah, trying to  get as much inside information as possible about gang activity throughout the city.

"We have a detective that does guns, I do the gang information, which means I go out and interview street level, at the high school. collect information."

Detective Carter knows several members of the Tatemville Terror and Hellhole, two gangs he says were involved in the Coastal Empire Shooting. Carter says Hellhole originated near 54th street and Montgomery, and in recent years that gang has had issues with the Tatemville Terror.

These gang members have no problem showing their pride, and this can be seen at any park or playground in certain neighborhoods across the city.

Carter says Savannah is unique from other cities because the majority of the gangs are classified by neighborhood. For example, Carter says the 34th street/Burroughs Street area has roughly six gangs alone.

Despite several instances of recent crime, Carter says there's no need to be alarmed. He says the majority of the people involved in these crimes know each other. He says they're not attacking anyone they don't know, and it's not random violence.
