Authorities say they've logged 43 gangs at the jail

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Officers at the Chatham County Detention Center say they come in contact with dozens of gang members.

"Most of them are teenagers. They don't know what they are doing. That is part of their age. All they know is they have a gun in their hand and they have to shoot someone," said Corbin Wooding with the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Wooding is in charge of figuring out which inmates are in gangs.

For every booking, they photograph the tattoos and log them into a computer database.

He said the tattoos are usually the big giveaway.

Once behind bars, the officers have to make clear they are the ones in control.

"If he has control, they will fear him but we don't let them have control because once we tag them we put them on lockdown," Wooding said.

Wooding said they frequently search the cellblocks to find gang paraphernalia. He said the gang situation in Savannah is constantly evolving.
