A Wheeler High School student was participating in a senior year study abroad program in Bali, Indonesia when she drowned over the weekend.

Morgan Lide was staying with a host family at the time.

She was swimming in the ocean with that family when she disappeared. She later washed up on the shore, but was unresponsive.

Her parents Chuck and Lori Lide of Marietta told CBS Atlanta News their door bell rang in the middle of the night with representatives from Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad Program, delivering the tragic news.

"It was painful. No way to describe it. It's tragic," Chuck Lide said.

Lori Lide said her daughter's death deeply affected two families.

"The family she lived with and what they are going through. It's just heartbreaking, they're heart-broken as well. It's a sad tragedy," Lori Lide said.

Morgan Lide blogged monthly about her experience overseas and shared pictures, including one of her cooking with her host family and with kids she was helping to teach English.

Family spokesperson Maria Myler called Morgan Lide, "An amazing young girl."

Before going to Bali, the honors student worked with orphans with the Stretch Mission in Costa Rica, which she was involved with through the Wheeler High School Leadership Club for students.

Her parents hope her legacy can live on by donations being made to that effort through the Roswell Baptist Church at

The family said they are grateful their family, friends, neighbors and co-workers have been so supportive during this very difficult time.

Morgan Lide is survived by her parents and an older sister, Catherine Lide.
