Brianna McIntosh plays like any other four year old, when she has the strength. But chemo treatments for leukemia have robbed her of some of that natural energy. Her mother, Christy, recalled the high fever that led them to the emergency room in late September.
"Theyadmitted her and did a test and her white blood count was 443,000 that was the highest they'd ever seen it," she explained.
Within an hour, crews hustled Brianna to a helicopter and flew her to Atlanta for immediate treatments.
"All I could do is cry. I couldn't even think straight. It was like my life had just ended because I just didn't know what to do," Christy confided.
The chemotherapy has been rough. Bug, as she's known to relatives, lost all of her long brown hair. She hasn't eaten since treatments began and a tube that goes down her nose supplies her nutrition. This Saturday, folks can have a quick test done to see if they're a potential donor for a bone marrow transplant. It only takes a swab sample from the inside of the cheek.
Christy said Brianna has been the strong one so far and she continued to hope they find a donor match Saturday to make this little girl's body as strong as her spirit.
The drive will take place at Temple Baptist Church, 298 Northside Drive East, from 10a.m. to 1 p.m. Interested donors who can't attend the drive Saturday can visit www.bethematch.org.
