Firefighters practice rappelling at the Hilton Desoto

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah firefighters were called out to the Hilton Desoto Friday but it wasn't for an emergency. Members of the technical rescue team were practicing rappelling and rescuing patients from tall buildings. As part of the exercise, firefighters rescued a patient who slipped off the roof and got caught on something. They lowered a basket to the patient and guided it down. The department picks a different building each year for this kind of training.

"It is very important just for the fact that we don't do it all the time, unlike fire, which we have all the time. Everybody is used to fighting fires even though fires aren't the same every time. For any type of technical rescue, the more we train, the better off we are when it does arise," said Cpt. Scott Barksdale, Savannah Fire and Emergency Services.

Eight firefighters rappelled and 20 took part in the exercise.
