Folks may soon know who is taking over the South Carolina US Senate seat vacated by Jim DeMint.
Sources close to Gov. Nikki Haley say she has narrowed the field down to five finalists – US Rep. Tim Scott, US Rep. Trey Gowdy, former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford, State Agency Director Catherine Templeton and former State Attorney General Henry McMaster. Haley says her decision will come very soon.
"I want it sooner than later. Just because I see no good in dragging this out. But, like I said, there is a process. So, what I will tell you is as soon as we know, you will know. But it is not going to be too much longer," said Haley.
WTOC spoke with Scott and while he can neither confirm or deny his candidacy, he says he is excited about hearing the governor's decision.
"Of course the chances are good that anyone offered the position would take it but at this point, it seems so far away that it is hard to get my arms around it completely," said Scott.
State redistricting moved Scott's first district seat into parts of Beaufort County.
