The name of a woman who was killed in a crash Wednesday while driving to work on US Hwy 17 just past Richmond Hill has been released.
Susan Clark, the deputy coroner in Bryan County, said the SUV driver who was killed Wednesday morning was 62-year-old Mary M. Guiendon. She was principal at Button Gwinnett Elementary School in Liberty County.
There will not be an autopsy, according to the deputy coroner.
The crash happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. Troopers with Georgia State Patrol said a school bus had stopped to pick up children and a semi was stopped behind the bus. That is when an SUV came up and slammed into the back of the semi.
EMS arrived and pronounced the Guiendon dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the GSP. Guiendon's husband arrived at the wreck scene and was notified about the death.
Southbound traffic on US Hwy 17 had to be turned around in front of the KOA Campground for about from 6:30 to 8:25 a.m., causing the northbound traffic to back up. US 17 has since reopened to traffic.
No other injuries were reported. The wreck is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
