Screven family hopes for ATV wheelchair

Gentry Marsh Gentry Marsh

Gentry Marsh wants to do many of the things other 11-year-old boys do. But cerebral palsy forces him to rely on an aluminum walker with wheels on the bottom.

"Much of the time he crawls," explained him mother Tara. "He uses the walker but it tires him out quickly."

Some of Tara's lifelong friends saw a motorized all-terrain wheelchair at the Sunbelt Expo back in October. They put her in touch with the manufacturers to determine what features Gentry could use. They also began working on the roughly $10,000 cost. The company requires half the cost paid up front when a chair is ordered.

The Marshes friends across Screven County also began raising money. The friends who saw the chair used their business, Southern Outfitters, to organize an event on Dec. 15.

"It's just been amazing the way people have come forward and helped us," Tara noted.

One of those helpers has been Robyn Banks in Toombs County. Her family purchased a similar chair for their son Tracy back in April.

"It has been amazing to talk to her because our sons were born one month apart. She has faced the same struggles as a mom that I have," Marsh stated.

The event will last from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Screven Outdoors on North Main Street.

For those who aren't able to attend, an account has been established at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Sylvania in the name of "Gentry's Action Trackchair Fundraiser".
