Folks waiting for the new Wal-Mart Super Center in Sandfly won't have to wait much longer. It is set to open on Wednesday, July 21 at 8am. You may think small businesses in the area are very threatened, but some say they actually are looking forward to the super center.
Maycrest Hardware on Montgomery Cross Road has been around for more than 50 years. "I was gone for 20 years, my dad shopped here, I used to tag along when I was little for years and years and years," recalled shopper Patsy Buccy of Savannah. "A couple of months ago I said, 'I need something from Maycrest,' and he said, 'I think they closed,' and I just about panicked, cause I knew I could get it here."
The crowded homey feel of a family-owned hardware store has much more of an appeal to Buccy than the new sprawling Wal-Mart.
"I like to be able to touch it and feel it and I know the various people around here," she said. "If I can't find it on my own there's someone to answer my questions."
And the store manager says he isn't too worried about competition from the super center. "They may hurt us in some aspects, like I think Home Depot does, but in bigger ways they help us I believe, because of the volume of customers they send here for repairs," manager Andy Whitfield said. "While they are waiting on repairs, people look around the store."
Wal-Mart has a lot, but Maycrest has something it doesn't: the store will repair the products people buy from the super center.
"They sell a lot of the product we work on," said Whitfield. "I know that they'll be sending a lot of customers down here from their store, so that will be a big help to us."
The Chatham Plaza Wal-Mart closes July 20 at 6pm, and the new one opens on Wednesday, July 21 at 8am.
