RIDGELAND, SC (WTOC) -
A former Ridgeland water and sewer clerk was convicted and
sentenced Wednesday afternoon for embezzlement.
Mandy Drew, 36, was convicted of one count of embezzlement
for siphoning an estimated $118,000 from the town's water/sewer fund between
April 2009 and January 2011.
Drew took payments made to the town and fraudulently posted
them so they would not appear on the current year's ledger or in the daily
deposits made to the bank, according to Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Drew pocketed the money and credited the customer's account
either after the daily payment log had been printed or in a prior year to cover
up the crime.
The discrepancies were discovered during an audit by town
officials. They worked with the State Law Enforcement Division and the solicitor's
office with the prosecution during the investigation.
Drew was sentenced to five years in prison and five years of
probation. She was also ordered repay $118,036 in restitution.
