CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police search a neighborhood after the driver of a stolen van crashed into two different homes and fled the area overnight.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police first noticed the van around 2am Friday morning driving without headlights.

Officers said they tried to make a traffic stop along West Boulevard, but the person behind the wheel of the minivan wasn't about to pull over.

The vehicle took off at a high rate of speed.

The CMPD decided not to chase the van, but moments later found the driver had crashed into two homes along the 2700 block of Beech Nut Road in west Charlotte.

The first home had the most damage, a glancing blow from the van's right side left a gaping hole in the front of the home.

No one inside was hurt.

The van then crashed into the porch of the house next door.  That home, according to officers, was abandoned.

The driver had disappeared.

Police said they figured out early on the van had been stolen.  Canine units were brought out to try to track the suspect down, but with no luck.
