Students walked across the stage at Hanner Fieldhouse and began a new phase of their lives. Georgia Southern University conferred 1,549 undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees in their 21st annual Fall Commencement.
The group marks the university's largest fall class. GSU President Dr. Brooks Keel congratulated graduates on their achievement. It is a mileston students like Derek Von Waldner have waited for many years.
"I'm extremely happy and enthusiastic to take these skills I've learned at Georgia Southern to the workplace and better the community. I'm just ridiculously excited. I can't explain it any other way," Von Waldner explained.
The commencement speakers included GSU graduate Leonard Bevill, the president and chief executive officer of Macon Occupational Medicine, Frank Simmons III, Ph.D., P.E., structures staff scientist, technical fellow, and lead FAA Structures DER at Gulfstream Aerospace, and GSU graduate Dr. Kara Martin, internist and hospitalist for Kaiser Permanente at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Martin earned additional honors as Miss Georgia Southern University, Miss Georgia, and first runner-up Miss America.
Georgia Southern offers 120 degree programs through its eight colleges.
