SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The city of Savannah along with Georgia Southern University answering questions about an archaeological dig under way next to city hall.

The project is intended to help the city come up with answers for one of Savannah's great architectural mysteries.

The goal to find out what the 177 year old vaults known as the Cluskey Embankment Stores were used for.

Blake Agala states: "My thesis is really to determine what these vaults were used for if we can actually find evidence of that, which I hope that we will. But, not every investigation is conclusve and so that's what I would really hope to try and do."

Once complete the city plans to install historic markers explaining the site's historical significance as well as its contribution to the larger Savannah story.
