RIDGELAND, SC (WTOC) -

A man is charged in connection with a high-speed chase Sunday afternoon in Jasper County.

At about noon Sunday, Ridgeland police working traffic on Interstate 95 southbound near mile marker 24 tried to pull over a green 2000 Acura for speeding. Police said the driver didn't stop and increased his speed.

Dispatch told officers that the car was stolen. The driver took exit 22 onto US 17 and sped south and drove in a reckless manner, according to police.

As the chase continued south, the driver got back onto I-95 at mile marker 18. He swerved from lane to lane and hit a police cruiser near the Crowfield Road overpass, according to police. The driver then lost control of the car and ran off the right shoulder, hitting the embankment. The car overturned.

The driver, David Tyler Delgado, 18, of Nolensville, Tenn., was taken into custody at the scene.  He was taken to the hospital, treated for his injuries and released to police.

Delgado was taken to the Jasper County Detention Center. He is also being held on federal charges from the U.S. Military.

He is charged with speeding, fail to stop for blue lights and siren and assault on a police officer with a vehicle.
