PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) -

A man is arrested and charged after a traffic stop early Sunday morning.

A Port Wentworth police officer noticed a suspicious vehicle without its headlines on in a subdivision just after midnight Sunday.

The officer saw the vehicle move to an area of unoccupied homes and homes under construction. The officer conducted a traffic stop and 23-year-old Robert Smith, a bus driver for First Student, was driving with a 14 year old teenage girl, according to police.

Smith told police they were just talking and that he had only kissed the teen. The teen's mother was unaware of the girl's whereabouts and did not give the female permission to be with Smith, according to police.

Smith was charged with enticing a child for indecent purposes, interference with child custody and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The teen was released to a family member at the mother's instruction.

First Student says the arrest came as a shock because of their extensive hiring process.

"Before you are hired here, you have to go through a background check. Dealing with children, safety first, and that is inclusive in the background. It tells us all about your history and your past.

First Student says they have never received complaints about the driver. He is on leave pending an investigation.

Smith is being held in the Chatham County Detention Center without bond.
