Palmetto Electric warns customers of scheme

HARDEEVILLE, SC (WTOC) -

Palmetto Electric is warning its customers about a new utility scheme.

The company says individuals are calling members pretending to be representatives and asking for a payment to avoid a disconnection of services.

"We had at least three documented instances of our customers receiving phone calls from a number asking for them to send $205 or their electric services would be cut off," said Jimmy Baker, Palmetto Electric. "They are being instructed to go to a retail store and purchase something called a monypak."

Officials say Hispanic customers have been targeted in all three instances.

Members say the number on the called ID is 559.800.8960.

Folks who receive this call should contact law enforcement and Palmetto Electric right away.
