1,300 gallons of sewage spill in drainage system

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A blocked sewer main on Monday resulted in an estimated 1,300 gallons of sewage spilling into the storm drainage system that flows into the Savannah River.

The spill happened at 502 East River St. and was caused by a "sewer force main break," according to a city news release.

City Water and Sewer crews were notified about the spill at 8:03 a.m. Monday. The spill was fixed at 2:15 p.m., the main was repaired and street and sidewalk were cleaned up.  

It's classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines, according to the city.

Agencies required by the State EPD were notified. Signs about the spill were posted placed at areas of public access to the river in the area affected by the spill.

The city will be looking into the cause of the break to minimize future breaks, according to the city.
