CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Dr. James Metts Jr., 82, Chatham County's coroner for the past 40 years, resigned from his job last week, according to County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis.

Metts told county commissioners that he is leaving for personal reasons and because of his age. He was just re-elected in November, having run unopposed.

Dr. William Wessinger has been appointed and sworn in to replace Metts.

"I was sworn in today by the Probate Judge Harris Lewis. It appeared to be an opportunity to serve the public," said Wessinger.
