Police chief supports assault weapons ban

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Police Chief Willie Lovett said Tuesday he would support some sort of ban on assault weapons.

"I really don't think people need an assault rifle," Chief Lovett said.

Lovett says the shootings in Connecticut have been on his mind.

He says it has made him think about the gun problem in Savannah and firearms getting into the hands of people who shouldn't have them.

"We all need to examine the gun laws, especially here in Georgia. What happened there can happen here," Lovett said.

Lovett says people leave their guns unlocked in their homes and cars. He says many times the guns get stolen and end up on the street in the hands of bad guys.

"It is easy for anyone to get a gun. I'm not talking about the legal way, I'm talking about people stealing guns. That is the biggest problem," Lovett said.

Lovett says he supports everyone's right to own a gun, but thinks they need to be more careful keeping them secure.
