LIBERTY CO., GA (WTOC) -
Several federal, state and county agencies conducted a registered
sex offender compliance check during the week of Dec. 10 in Liberty County.
Operation Childsafe involved more than 20 law enforcement
agencies including: the U.S. Marshals Service for the Southern District of
Georgia, the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, the Marshals Southeast Regional
Fugitive Task Force, the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Hinesville
Probation Office and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Authorities verified the location of 126 sex offenders. Of
those verified, three were on state parole and 39 were on state probation. Two
people were arrested on probation violations. One of them was charged with possession
of a firearm by a convicted felon. Two
firearms were seized, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Operation Childsafe involved physically verifying where each
offender lived and work in compliance with Georgia's sex offender registry law.
It's the second such verification sweep that has been conducted and more are
planned in the future, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
