A SCMPD car headed to foot chase was struck by a cement truck from behind.
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
A Savannah man is in custody on theft and drug charges after a pursuit by police on Thursday morning.
Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said officers from two precincts, canine officers and a helicopter closed in on Donte Tramaine Swann, 34, who was driving a stolen car on Thursday morning.
Swann was captured with a female acquaintance at LeHigh and Pinpoint avenues after a foot chase through a wooded area.
The silver 2012 Mercedes was reported stolen Dec. 9 from an Island Drive residence on Wilmington Island. Police said the Mercedes owners left the car unlocked and there was a spare key kept inside the car. It was recovered undamaged.
On Thursday morning, officers noticed a driver speeding in the Mercedes on Middleground Road. A Metro Aviation helicopter that was on routine patrol in the area was called in.
Aviation officers tracked the Mercedes to the Pinpoint area near Ferguson Avenue and Diamond Causeway, where the other officers were waiting.
When the car was stopped, the two people inside jumped out and ran through a wooded area until canine officers went after them.
Island Precinct detectives found marijuana in Swann's possession and determined the woman with him was unaware that the car was stolen until they began running from it, according to police.
Swann is charged with theft by receiving auto and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. The woman was not charged.
A police car headed to the search was hit from behind by a cement truck at Waters Avenue and Montgomery Cross Road. It sustained minor damage.
