Friday marks Day of Mourning

Posted: Updated:

HARTFORD, CT (WTOC/WFSB) - A moment of silence will take place Friday morning to honor victims of a school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

On the morning of Dec. 14, Adam Lanza, 20, fatally shot his mother at home. He then went to Sandy Hook Elementary School and fatally shot 20 children, who were between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults before shooting himself in the head.

On Tuesday, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy declared Friday a Day of Mourning. He asked Connecticut residents to observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. to honor the victims. The governor is expected to ring bells 26 times for all the victims.

Mourners in Connecticut and around the country will take part in the observance.

Malloy sent a letter to every governor in the U.S. to have them consider a moment of reflection and mourning in their states.
