City employees collect canned goods for America's Second Harvest

City of Savannah employees stepped up after hearing that America's Second Harvest's cupboards were almost bare this holiday season. With four days notice, city employees collected an estimated 12,000 cans of food.

"I am so proud of our city employees today," said Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson in a press release. "They dedicate themselves to protect and improve the lives of our citizens, so it shouldn't surprise me that they rose to this occasion. But I still amazed at this display."

The city says they had participation from every department. America's Second Harvest is grateful for everything they have done.

"We are so excited. This is going to help so many people in our community make it through the holidays and even into the winter months. So, this is just outstanding and it's unbelievable that this time of year we have this kind of support," said Mary Jane Crouch, America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia  executive director.

Second Harvest says the donation should help them feed families for quite some time. The donation weighed in at 21,432 pounds, which is enough to provide 16,614 meals.
