Wrong-way driver causes series of crashes

Investigators are trying to determine if a medical condition could have caused a Savannah man to drive the wrong way on the Truman Pkwy, causing several crashes on Friday.

Joseph Sero, 42, of Autum Leaves Ct., was taken to Memorial University Medical Center after the Jeep Cherokee he was driving crashed head-on into another Jeep Cherokee on the overpass across Victory Dr. around 1:30 p.m.

Investigators are trying to confirm if a medical crisis caused by low blood sugar disoriented him.

The driver of the other Jeep, Thomas Wood, 29, of Chevis Rd, was also transported for treatment.

Officers from Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team have determined that Sero entered the divided highway driving north in the southbound lanes at Eisenhower Dr.

Almost immediately, his Jeep sideswiped and overturned one car. He was then involved in a second collision near Derenne Ave. and the final crash on the Victory Overpass.

Southbound lanes between Victory and Eisenhower, portions of the northbound lanes between Eisenhower and Derenne, and all entrances to the highway were closed until 5 p.m. for investigation and cleanup.

MAIT is continuing to investigate.
