More Beaufort shoppers buying local for the holidays
BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -
Christmas is just days away and many shoppers are out getting last minute gifts. Downtown Beaufort is a busy place as many shoppers finish up their Christmas lists.
"I have a few people I need to get a few things for," said Patty Cline, Beaufort. "I usually get an early start but not this year so kind of working on things at the last minute but that's okay, it's going to fall together."
"We've had a lot of shoppers the past few days," said Kevin Cuppia, Modern Jewelers owner. "We've seen a large increase in the number of people coming in."
Cuppia says not only are they seeing more customers, but they're seeing more locals.
"We've seen a real trend of a lot of people shopping locally this year, which is exciting," said Cuppia. "We really need people to help by shopping local. We like to support our community with charitable donations and gifts to different charities and by people shopping local, we're certainly able to be more helpful to the community."
M Home and Garden is also seeing more local customers visiting their shop.
"Christmas season has been terrific, we've gotten great support from people in Beaufort County," said Dawn Page, M Home and Garden. "From Night on the Town, they came out, they are strong, they're stopping and they come back. We couldn't do it without our locals."
Many shoppers say supporting local businesses is on the top of their lists.
"They have name brands, great gift ideas and quality things so I buy here first," said Cindy Thompson, Beaufort.
Downtown merchants say they're hoping this trend will help make for a great holiday season.
"We've still got a ways to go. Over four biggest days are right here. I think we will be even with last year, hopefully a little up," said Cuppia.
