Beaufort County deputies will take new responsibilities as school resource officers in county elementary schools.
The move is part of a plan that launches in January that gives 16 deputies new responsibilities, according to the Island Packet.
School resource officers have been in county middle and high schools since 1995.
Under the plan, the 16 deputies will check in on schools during their routine patrols, and they will be trained in-house, the Island Packet reports.
