Community says goodbye to murdered Griffin girl

Posted: Updated:

Less than a week after a 9-year-old girl was reported missing and found dead shortly after, family and friends laid her to rest.

Skylar Dials' funeral was held at Center Point Church in Griffin where her family members have been active members.

Skylar was going to visit a friend Friday on Yarbrough Mill Road in Griffin when she was killed.

She took a 30- to 40-yard path through the woods that she'd used many times, but she never arrived at the friend's house.

Searchers went door-to-door, and searched the woods with K-9 units to try to find Skylar.

Spalding County Sheriff Wendell Beam said Skylar's body was found around 2 a.m. Saturday, roughly 200 to 300 yards behind her home in a wooded area.

Police arrested Shane Clifton Collett, 40, in connection with her death. He lived at the home Skylar was supposed to be visiting and has been charged with kidnapping, murder and concealing a death.

A mug shot released Saturday by Spalding County Sheriff officials revealed gashes on Collett's face at the time of the arrest. Sheriff officials believe those injuries may have come from an attempt to hide Skylar's body.

Spalding County Sheriff officials will not release Skylar's cause of death at this time, but said forensic evidence showed she had not been sexually assaulted.

Skylar's family has asked that donations be made in lieu of flowers in her name to the Griffin-Spalding Humane Society because of her love of animals.
