Spalding County sheriff's investigators said the neighbor of a 9-year-old girl found dead three days before Christmas has confessed to killing the girl.
Shane Clifton Collett, 40, is in the Spalding County Jail without bond, charged with the murder and kidnapping of Skylar Dials.
Last Friday, Skylar's family reported her missing after she didn't return from the home of a friend. Spalding County authorities joined forces with other law enforcement agencies to search for the girl.
Searchers found her body at about 2 a.m. Saturday, roughly 300 yards from her home.
Later that day, authorities arrested Collett, who had been living in the home of the family Skylar intended to visit the day she went missing.
Investigators believe marks on Collett's face, seen in his mug shot, came from either a struggle with the girl or from when he tried to move Skylar's body.
Collett has no previous arrests. A preliminary hearing will likely be on Jan. 8 or Jan. 10.
Spalding County Sheriff's Captain Tony Ranieri said authorities will not immediately release a cause of death. Ranieri said there was no evidence of sexual assault.
