A wild chase overnight ended with two police cars damaged and a suspect in custody. It started about 1:30am this morning when officers spotted a car fitting the description of one used in a bank robbery. When officers tried to pull the car over, the driver refused to stop, then spun the Camaro around and used it to hit two police cars chasing him.
But the officers continued driving, and the chase ended when the driver of the Camaro lost control of the car and crashed into a fence along I-516. The suspect jumped over the fence and ran into the woods as police surrounded the area and sent in one of their most potent weapons.
"We brought the dog out and set up a perimeter, then after about an hour, an hour and 15 minutes of tracking through some of the thickest stuff that's probably in Chatham County, we found him laying in the bushes and effected the arrest," said Lt. Harold Ragan with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.
The suspect was bitten by one of the dogs. He was checked over by doctors and treated. Police say the red Camaro matches one that was involved in the robbery of the Darby Bank yesterday in Garden City.
For now, the suspect is charged with aggravated assault on two police officers, with a number of other charges pending.
