Officer Samantha Stephens urges residents to lock their vehicles to prevent theft.
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Savannah-Chatham
Metro Police Dept.'s Crime Prevention Dept. is asking drivers to be attentive during the winter months.
The unit has seen an increase in auto thefts all over Savannah
because of the cold weather. So far, 640 auto thefts have been reported to police. That's about 12 and a half cars stolen a week.
Officer Samantha Stephens suggests locking your
vehicle and not leaving your car unattended - especially if the keys are
inside.
"I know it's cold, the weather has been up and
down, and I know that people are concerned about heating their cars prior to
getting in them, but based on the increase in auto thefts, we are asking them
to reconsider," Stephens said.
