LEVY, SC (WTOC) -

A woman is killed and three people in custody after a crash during a chase Thursday afternoon in the Lowcountry. It all started when some people were shoplifting at the Tanger Outlets in Bluffton and then took off.

Deputies had responded just after 3 p.m. Thursday to the Michael Kors store at Tanger Outlet 1 in Bluffton on a report that a group took merchandise and assaulted a clerk who tried to stop them from leaving. The employee gave a description of the suspects' and their car.

Beaufort County sheriff's deputies spotted the Toyota Camry in the area of Hwy 170 and Hwy 46 that was headed toward Jasper County. But when deputies caught up, the suspects' car slammed head-on into a pickup truck. Then the car slammed into a tree on SC 315 in Levy.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck Steven Tahan, 63, was not injured, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Witnesses said they saw three black males run into the woods nearby. Deputies found them hiding in the bushes in the area of Roper Road. They were taken into custody without incident, according to the sheriff's office.

The Camry driver Craig Scott, 22, is charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene involving death. He's being held at the Jasper County Detention Center. The second suspect, a 16-year-old boy, is charged with leaving the scene involving death. He's being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.

The third suspect, Jacob Edward, 20, is charged with leaving the scene involving a death. He's being held at the Jasper County Detention Center.

A fourth subject, a black female, was found inside the crashed Camry. She was pronounced dead at the scene. SCHP is handling the crash investigation.

A passenger in the pickup truck was taken by EMS to Coastal Carolina Hospital.

BCSO investigators are handling the shoplifting investigation and more charges are expected.
