HAZLEHURST, GA (WTOC) -
Preston Bohannon took the oath of office on Friday to serve as Jeff Davis County's next sheriff. He also pledged to bring closure and stability to the community.
Four years ago, Jimmy Boatright faced no opposition for another term as sheriff. However, he was quickly removed from office on indictments of bank and wire fraud related to federal grant funds. Richard Deas won a special election to fill Boatright's term, but has suffered health problems that have kept him from being in the office and actively involved in the department.
Bohannon won a primary, runoff, and general election that saw eight candidates for the office.
"The people are ready to see someone out in the community and working with them and that's much of my agenda to start with," he said inside the Jeff Davis Courthouse on Friday. "Sheriff Deas did the best he could in the circumstances."
Bohannon told WTOC he hopes to help bring the community together after such a contentious campaign and after the Boatright scandal.
