BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

Stolen handbags have been recovered after a shoplifting incident in Bluffton that ended with a car chase and fatal crash Thursday in Jasper County.

Twenty-five handbags that were stolen Thursday from the Michael Kors store in the Tanger Outlet 1 complex were recovered from a Camry that crashed at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. The purses are worth more than $7,000.

The Toyota Camry was a rental car, and the four suspects were from the Savannah area, according to the BCSO.

Deputies had responded to a shoplifting report. Three black males went into the store and a female waited in the car, according to the sheriff's office. The employee provided a description of the suspects and the getaway car to deputies.

"The clerk reported that when they tried to stop the individuals from fleeing the store, they actually assaulted him. The clerk was able to get a very good description of the suspects as well as the vehicle they fled the scene in," said Sgt. Robin McIntosh, of the Beaufort County Sheriff's office.

Deputies near Hwy 170 and Hwy 46 spotted a car that matched the description of the suspects' headed toward Jasper County. The driver of the car sped up so the deputies could no longer see them.

As deputies got into Jasper County, they saw that the car had crashed into a tree. Witnesses told deputies they saw three black males run into the nearby woods. Deputies found them hiding in the bushes in the area of Roper Road. They were taken into custody without incident.

The fourth suspect, a black female, was found inside the crashed Camry, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Craig Scott, 22, Jacob Edwards, 20, and Bernard Carter, 20, were arrested by SCHP. They remain in custody at the Jasper County Detention Center. They will face felony shoplifting charges in Beaufort County pending satisfaction of charges in Jasper County, according to the sheriff's office.
