EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
An Effingham
County Sheriff's Deputy has a long road to recovery ahead of him after being
involved in a rollover crash.
The Sheriff's
Office says Deputy Anthony Cantrell had surgery this weekend and is recovering
from multiple injuries after losing control of his patrol car Friday morning on
Midland Road near Nease Road, just outside of Guyton.
ECSO says Deputy Cantrell and his K-9 partner, J.O., were in the
cruiser with its lights and sirens on when the driver in front of them slammed
on his brakes. Cantrell swerved to try to avoid hitting the vehicle, lost control and rolled
into a ditch. Cantrell and the police dog were pinned inside the cruiser for
more than 30 minutes.
Cantrell
was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah while his K-9, J.O., suffered only minor injuries.
The other driver, identified as Rhett Cash of Rincon,
has been cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
