CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Meg Heap will be sworn in Wednesday morning as the new district attorney of Chatham County.

Heap beat out incumbent and her former employer Larry Chisolm for the seat that he held for four years. She landed 56 percent of the vote over Chisolm's 43 percent.

Heap said her first duty is to make sure the new major crimes unit is ready, which includes making sure all the prosecutors are prepared to handle those kinds of cases. That will go into effect Feb. 1.

She said she will assess the current district attorney's office to make sure that the younger attorneys are trained properly. Heap also made it clear that she will work closely with programs that focus on keeping down juvenile crime.

Heap is scheduled to take the oath of office at 9:30 a.m. Wed. in Judge Michael Karpf's Courtroom (Courtroom K) on the fourth floor of Chatham County Courthouse at 133 Montgomery St.
