LONG CO., GA (WTOC) -

A family is forced out of their home after a fire destroyed their home on Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out about 4:30 p.m. on Water Oak Lane near Cypress Creek Drive. Capt. Ray Purcell, of the Ludowici-Long County Fire Dept., told WTOC that a family of two adults and five children were heading out of town when a neighbor spotted smoke. The neighbor called 911 and then called family.

Purcell said firefighters arrived to the single-story brick home with heavy smoke coming from the roof and a corner window. They forced their way inside and found the family's two cats dead.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control. The fire was confined to one room, although there was heavy smoke and water damage.

The house was uninhabitable, so the family spent the night with a neighbor.
